The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
